Seizing the Time

Information for Social Change is an activist organisation that examines issues of censorship, freedom and ethics amongst library and information workers. It is committed to promoting alternatives to the dominant paradigms of library and information work and publishes its own journal, Information for Social Change (freely available online at https://informationforsocialchange.wordpress.com/).

The ways by which information is controlled and mediated has a serious influence on the ways people think, how they communicate, what they believe is the “real world”, what the limits of the permissible are. This applies equally to information that comes through the channels of the mass media, through our bookshops or through our libraries.

Of course, free and equal access to information is a myth throughout the world, although different situations pertain in different countries. Control is more explicit and cruder in some places, more “sophisticated” and more invisible elsewhere (for example in Britain). One of the aims of Information for Social Change is to document these situations.

But we want to go further than that, documenting also the alternatives to this control, the radical and progressive channels by which truly unfettered, unmediated ideas may circulate. And further still: to encourage information workers to come together, to share ideas, to foster these alternatives – whether we are publishers, librarians, booksellers, communication workers or distributors. Putting Ideas Into Action

• To address issues of freedom of information and censorship as they affect library and information work.
• To promote alternatives to mainstream library and information provision.
• To provide a forum for the exchange of radical views on library and information issues.
• To debate ethics and freedom within the library and information professions.
• To challenge the dominant paradigms of library and information work. We publish a journal Information for Social Change twice a year.

We also organise seminars and conferences, sometimes in associations with other progressive organisations such as LINK and the Black Radical and Third World Book Fair. The Better Read than Dead conferences, for example looked at non-capitalist library provisions in Cuba, Vietnam, North Korea and China. The conference proceeding were subsequently published.

Mae Gwybodaeth ar  gyfer Newid Cymdeithasol yn fudiad gweithredol sy’n archwilio materion yn  ymwneud â sensoriaeth, rhyddid a moeseg ymhlith llyfrgellwyr a gweithwyr gwybodaeth.  Y mae’n ymroddedig i hybu dewisiadau eraill i batrymau trech gwaith llyfrgell a  gwybodaeth ac yn cyhoeddi ei gylchgrawn ei hun, sef Gwybodaeth ar gyfer Newid Cymdeithasol (ar gael am ddim ar-lein –  gweler https://informationforsocialchange.wordpress.com/).

Mae’r ffyrdd y mae gwybodaeth yn cael ei rheoli a’i  chyfnewid yn cael dylanwad difrifol ar y ffyrdd y mae pobl yn meddwl, y ffyrdd  y maent yn cyfathrebu, eu cysyniad o’r “byd go iawn”, beth yw cyfyngiadau’r hyn  sy’n ganiataol. Mae hyn yn berthnasol i wybodaeth sy’n dod trwy sianeli’r  cyfryngau torfol, yn ogystal â thrwy ein siopau llyfrau a thrwy ein  llyfrgelloedd.

Wrth gwrs, myth rhyngwladol yw bod modd cael gafael ar  wybodaeth yn gyfartal ac am ddim, er bod yna sefyllfaoedd gwahanol mewn  gwledydd gwahanol. Mae rheolaeth yn fwy amlwg ac amrwd mewn rhai llefydd, yn  fwy “soffistigedig” ac yn fwy anweledig mewn llefydd eraill (er enghraifft ym  Mhrydain). Un o amcanion Gwybodaeth ar gyfer Newid Cymdeithasol yw cofnodi’r  sefyllfaoedd hyn.

Ond mae arnom eisiau mynd yn bellach na hynny, gan fynd ati  hefyd i gofnodi dewisiadau eraill i’r rheolaeth yma, y sianeli y gallai  syniadau gwirioneddol ddilyffethair a blaengar gael eu cylchredeg trwyddynt. Ac  yn fwy na hynny: i annog gweithwyr i ddod ynghyd, i rannu syniadau, i feithrin  y dewisiadau eraill hyn – boed ni’n gyhoeddwyr, yn llyfrgellwyr, yn  llyfrwerthwyr, yn weithwyr cyfathrebu neu’n ddosbarthwyr. Pwy bynnag ydych chi,  os ydych yn cydymdeimlo â ni, ymunwch â ni.

Rhoi Syniadau ar  Waith

• fynd i’r afael â materion yn ymwneud â rhyddid gwybodaeth a sensoriaeth fel y maent yn effeithio ar waith llyfrgell a gwybodaeth.
• hybu dewisiadau eraill i ddarpariaeth llyfrgell a gwybodaeth ganolog.
• ddarparu fforwm ar gyfer cyfnewid safbwyntiau radical ynghylch materion llyfrgell a gwybodaeth.
• drafod moeseg a rhyddid o fewn y galwedigaethau llyfrgell a gwybodaeth.
• herio patrymau trech gwaith llyfrgell a gwybodaeth.

Yr ydym yn cyhoeddi cylchgrawn Gwybodaeth ar gyfer Newid  Cymddeithasol ddwywaith y flwyddyn.

Yr ydym hefyd yn trefnu seminarau a chynadleddau, weithiau  ar y cyd â mudiadau blaengar eraill megis LINK a’r Radical Du a Ffair Lyfrau’r  Trydydd Byd. Roedd y cynadleddau Gwell Llythrennog na Marw, er enghraifft, yn  edrych ar ddarpariaethau llyfrgell anghyfalafol yng Nghiwba, Fietnam, Gogledd  Corea a Tsieina. Cyhoeddwyd ysgrifau’r cynadleddau yn ddiweddarach.

Information for Social Change (“Información para el Cambio Social”) es una organización activista que examina problemas de censura, libertad y ética entre bibliotecarios y trabajadores de la información. Está comprometida en promover alternativas a los paradigmas dominantes en el trabajo bibliotecológico e informativo, y publica su propia revista, Information for Social Change (disponible en forma libre online en https://informationforsocialchange.wordpress.com/).

Las maneras en que la información es controlada y manejada tienen una seria influencia en las formas en la que la gente piensa, en sus modos de comunicarse, y en sus creencias sobre qué es el “mundo real” o cuáles son los límites de lo permitido. Esto es igualmente válido para la información que se accede a través de los medios masivos, de las librerías o de nuestras bibliotecas.

Es evidente que el acceso libre y equitativo a la información es un mito en todo el mundo, aunque las situaciones sean distintas en los diferentes países. En algunos sitios, el control es más explícito y crudo, mientras que en otros (p.e. en Gran Bretaña) es más “sofisticado” e invisible. Uno de los objetivos de ISC es documentar tales situaciones.

Pero queremos ir más allá: documentar también las alternativas a ese control, los canales radicales y progresistas a través de los cuales pueden circular ideas realmente libres de cadenas y filtros. Y aún más: animar a los trabajadores de la información a unirse, a compartir ideas, a favorecer estas alternativas, ya se trate de editores, bibliotecarios, libreros, trabajadores de la comunicación o distribuidores.

Llevando ideas a la práctica

• Considerar aquellas temáticas referentes a libertad de información y a censura que afecten a la bibliotecología y las ciencias de la información.
• Promover alternativas a los servicios bibliotecarios e informativos dominantes.
• Proveer un foro para el intercambio de visiones radicales sobre temáticas relacionadas con la información y las bibliotecas.
• Debatir ética y libertad dentro de las disciplinas bibliotecarias e informativas.
• Desafiar el paradigma dominante de trabajo en información y bibliotecas.

Publicamos una revista (Information for Social Change) dos veces al año. También organizamos seminarios y conferencias, a veces en asociación con otras organizaciones progresistas, como LINK y la Feria del Libro Negra, Radical y del Tercer Mundo. Las conferencias “Better Read than Dead” (Mejor Leído que Muerto), por ejemplo, se centraron en servicios bibliotecarios no capitalistas en Cuba, Vietnam, Corea del Norte y China. Las actas de la conferencia fueron publicadas en forma subsiguiente.
